(a) I can cite several pieces of text-based evidence to support my analysis of Nya's and Salva's character in A Long Walk to Water.
(b) I can analyze how Linda Sue Park develops and contrasts the points of view of Nya and Salva in A Long Walk to Water.
2. Gathering Evidence and Inferring about Character in chapters one and two
(a) See Gathering Evidence graphic organizer - read directions silently.
(b) First column titled "Detail/Evidence" is where you will gather quotes (textual evidence can be any words, not just dialogue) from the text.
(c) "Inference/Reasoning" is where you will write your ideas about how the text is related to the Guiding Question.
(d) Discuss with a partner: What does it mean to infer? (hint: think about the map and title of the book).
(e) Turn to page 2 of A Long Walk to Water - first two paragraphs up to "...which was why..."
(f) Look at Graphic Organizer and discuss with a partner: "Based on the example in the first row, how do you think the cited evidence from the text supports the inference?"
(g) Row Two - discuss with partner and decide how to finish the sentence "This affects his identity..."
(h) Connect to Guiding Question: "How did the time period when Salva grew up affect his identity?"
(i) Connect to Guiding Question: "How did where Nya lives affect who she is?"
(j) Reread Chapter One aloud and pause for note-taking on Graphic Organizer. *Don't add anything to final column.
(k) Reread Chapter Two silently and pause for note-taking on Graphic Organizer.
3. Circle one row on the Gathering Evidence graphic organizer you think best exemplifies their ability to analyze how Linda Sue Park develops and contrasts Nya and Salva's points of view and explain why.
(a) Hand Graphic Organizers in before you leave.
